This is my new blog…

Hey everyone,

I have finally had the time to get my blog up and running for Eric Hess Design. From here, you will be able to keep tabs on what I am up to, current projects, latest trends and more!

Keep an eye on things around here, as a whole lot is going on right now…

Like what, you ask?

My freelancing is taking off, with a whole lot going in that department. I am the web administrator for a couple of websites, working on getting more design clients and, of course, continuing the everlasting process of learning as much as possible in the web design field – it truly is a never ending endeavor!

Oh, and have I mentioned that this is all in addition to having my full-time job and family life? Things certainly do get a bit hectic. That’s not what everyone wants to hear about, however. So each post, I will end by doing something that I will debut right here – the linkfest du jour! A collection of links that show interesting content, fascinating designs or inspirational artwork.

Basically, it will be a featured item that.. well… features items! (What a concept!)

Of course, you can also follow me on Twitter.

Without further delay.. Here is the first “LinkFest DU JOUR!!!”

And don’t worry.. All the links open up in new windows.

1) 25 of the best non-profit websitesFrom designm.ag I always love to see these kinds of sites. Generally, they have limited budgets, but demand a high enough web presence. This is where the web designer really comes in handy. Someone who can do high quality work – very high quality, I mean, check em out! – at a low cost? Amazing people… Amazing.

2) Why you shouldn’t hire a web designer - From webdesignbysteve.com Talk about using a headline to grab viewers… How can anyone in the web design field NOT click over to see what that is all about? After initially grabbing the viewers, Steve makes some great points about SEO and web design. I am not going to go through and ruin it all here, but it goes in to some great SEO tips that just about everyone can and should take note of.

3) Cookie cutters are for baking, NOT for websites - From jsgraphics.net One of the most “hallelujah” phrases I have read in a long time. People. DO NOT USE TEMPLATES. Ok, in some applications (mom and pop, tiny (see: $0) budget, internal) but by and large, they just make everything look the same. Sure, you can have templates built from scratch for you – and then use them throughout your site, this is not what I am speaking of. I am talking about taking a template from one of the many template sites out there and using it. This is why I refuse to create templates for clients. I like starting from scratch with an idea of a final look in mind, and going from there. There we go, now I can get off my soapbox.
